Cute suit riot

DC is the land of the power suit. It's a city where women find themselves in positions of serious power alongside members of the old boys' club and want to look like they fit the part. But, as almost any person in DC can attest, this often results in women wearing boxy, unflattering suits. Suits like this say, "I only care enough to fit in; I don't care to stand out - and above the rest."

But these women are in luck. Designers don't want women relegated to ill-fitting, chain store pieces, and women should not let themselves be boxed into these. This season, suits are combining the best elements of menswear with sleek, feminine silhouettes. Women have options to have fun with their suits while remaining true to the conservative nature of the city.

Take, for instance, Karlie Kloss in Bottega Veneta Fall 2010 RTW (also rocking the super hot deep side part):

Or Celine's Fall 2010 RTW collection:

And one more Fall 2010 RTW look, from Band of Outsiders (one of my biggest designer crushes - you know, clothes you can only dream of affording, but lust after anyway), which showcases how separates can achieve just as clean of a look as a suit.

Now, before I go into my favorite suits, remember: suits like this are investment pieces. You can buy a standard Ann Taylor suit, and that's great, but these pieces add a little more wow factor and little more originality. That's what I call bang for your buck.

YSL Tux One-Button Jacket, Mandarin-Collar Gilet & Full High-Waist Trousers, available at Bergdorf Goodman

Chloe Tweed Punto Milano Jacket and Pants, available at Bergdorf Goodman

Alexander McQueen Structured Shoulder Jacket and Crepe Pencil Skirt, available at Bergdorf Goodman

Donna Karan Belted Cascade Jacket and Drape Back Pencil Skirt, available at Bergdorf Goodman

So, if you clicked on any of those links, your mind was probably blown by the prices. If I didn't have to pay rent, I would make it a point to own at least one of those suits. However, if you are like me, in your mid-20s and enjoy having a roof over your head, here are a couple options to add some flair to your suiting wardrobe.

Georgie blazer and pants, coming soon to Shopbop: $360 and $220
J. Crew Super 120s Elan trouser and Nouvelle jacket: $98 and $230

Kay Unger Belted Skirt Suit, available at Neiman Marcus: $530
